What Makes Chicago CF Care Specialists Unique?
Dedicated Cystic Fibrosis Physician
Dr. Steven Boas has cared for over 1000 children and young adults with cystic
fibrosis. Realizing that the complex medical needs of people with CF were not
fully met, Dr. Boas has taken his 13 years of experience as a CF physician, his
experiences in traditional CF Center Hospital based health care delivery
systems, his humanistic approach to medical care, and the desire to do better
for the patients he cares for by creating a new model of CF care. This model of
comprehensive CF care in private practice has been presented at the North
American Cystic Fibrosis Conference.
Predictability and Consistency
Mutual frustration in the hospital system of CF care in terms of physician
availability has been expressed from physician and parent/patient alike. The
system encourages rotation of health care providers and the placement of
barriers to access to their primary CF care physician through the presence of
physician trainees and “on service” or “cross covering” physicians who are not
familiar with the history of the patient. It is ironic that during a parent’s
most stressful time—when their child is sick or in need of medical advice, that
the physician who primarily cares for them is often not available. In addition,
some hospital based clinics operate by having physicians in the clinic see
patients on a first come first serve basis system resulting in the patient not
seeing the same physician on each visit.
Overseeing all aspects of medical care by a consistent CF care-provider is a
hallmark feature of Chicago CF CARE Specialists. Although many critics call this
an “old fashioned” approach, patients and the staff at Chicago CF CARE
Specialists prefer this “well established” form of personalized
patient-physician relationship.
